A novel beach experience

This morning we visited a few of the " ancient" sites in Trieste starting with Arco Di Riccardo (the Augustun Gate) built in the 1st century and located no more than 200m from our accommodation

A few minutes walk from the gate is another 1st century structure, Teatro Romano (The Roman Theatre) which while it has seen better days will be preserved for all time

From the theatre which is at sea level we then walked/climbed/staggered up numerous steps until we were at one of the highest points of the city where there were two structures of significance.

Firstly Castello Di San Giusto (St Justus Castle) and said to be the symbol of Trieste was built over the period 1470-1630 and is possibly the second or third structure built on this site...

,..and Cattedrale Di San Guisto (Cathedral of St Justus) built in the 14th century. The cathedral has a very different look internally from others seen

The lighting in the cathedral makes the gold in this work sparkle and is a visual spectacular when seen in the flesh.

Also on a building near the cathedral is a "sun dial" clock

This afternoon we went for a swim at La Lanterna

What is strange re this photo?

Yes all the people are men and that is because this is a segregated beach - men on one side of a wall and ladies on the other, though the wall only juts out vertically approx a third of the length of the swimming area

This allows ladies to sunbathe without the attention of the males and also allows those who wish to to swim topless which numerous choose to do though it seemed odd to me that a few topless women choose to swim in sight of the men and flaunt themselves - this seemed to be contrary to the ideals of the beach which has been in existence since 1903 and is the only segregated beach in Europe.

Finally there are scooters galore in the city and quite a few made a veritable symphony of sound outside our window last night!
